2021 Update No. 12 Capturing Aircraft

2021 Update no. 12 Capturing Aircraft

Photographing Aircraft – Sam Hall

When: Tuesday 13 July 2021
Time: 7:30pm
Location: Hutt Valley Tramping Club, 15 Birch Street, Waterloo
Topic: How to get the best out of your aircraft photography

I’m a Lower Hutt local living in Kelson with my wife and two daughters. My father was in the Air Force and some of my earliest memories are of aircraft, airfields and air shows. This turned into a lifelong love of aviation and the sky, and a hobby in aircraft photography since I was old enough to be trusted with a camera. I enjoy the challenge of trying to photograph occasionally tricky subjects with sometimes only one chance to get the shot, and am always looking for the perfect photo and new aspects to focus on.

I started off using film before moving to digital SLRs with an assortment of zoom lenses that have progressively got larger over time. In New Zealand we have some great opportunities to get close to aircraft that don’t always exist elsewhere. In my presentation I’ll go over some of the basic techniques and principals involved in capturing them, and share some of the insights and stories behind some of my favourite images.
